Halo is the franchise that shaped the first-person shooter (FPS) genre for consoles. It remains one of the biggest video games of the modern era and you can follow the peak of its development in esports. Place your bets on professional Halo matches at Gamdom to win Bitcoin (BTC).

Key Takeaways

  • Halo Infinite is the main game used in the Halo esports scene. It is free-to-play with multiplayer game modes. The ranked modes serve as the foundation for the Halo Championship Series esports.
  • The Halo Championship Series starts in February and ends in October. It has an open ecosystem where teams must prove their qualification at open tournaments yearly.
  • The top teams in Halo esports as of 2024 are the World Champions of the last three seasons. These are OpTic Gaming (2022), FaZe Clan (2023), and Spacestation Gaming (2024).

What is Halo, the video game?

Halo is a franchise published by Microsoft that began with a game of the same name starring Master Chief. It’s a story-driven action game that popularised the modern formula for FPS gameplay on consoles. Now, it’s the foundation of a thriving esports scene and you can bet on its fixtures at Gamdom.

The latest game in the franchise is Halo Infinite (2021) developed by Halo Studios (formerly 343 Industries). Unlike its predecessors, it is a free-to-play multiplayer with a paid campaign mode. This makes the game accessible to a wide audience, creating a solid foundation for what is now the Halo World Championships.

Halo Esports tournaments

What makes Halo exciting is its open ecosystem where all teams can join and have a shot to play against the best teams of the year. Microsoft isn’t officially partnered with organisations so there is no team with a guaranteed seeding in every year’s major leagues. Instead, any group of players with 4 members and 1 coach can be a pro team in Halo.

Halo World Championship Series (HCS)

The centre of Halo esports is the annual Halo World Championship Series (HCS). It begins in February and ends in October when the grand winner of the year is declared. The champion of the Halo tournament 2024 is Spacestation Gaming.

The HSC has 2 splits with 2 LAN major tournaments in each one. LAN means that the teams are playing live in a stadium using equipment issued by Halo Studios and Microsoft. These are A-tier invitation-only tournaments. To qualify, each LAN major is preceded by a series of online tournaments where Halo esports teams participate to earn points based on performances.

Here’s a quick summary of Halo tournaments in order:

  • HCS Split 1
    • Arlington Major - February to March
    • London Major - March to June
  • HCS Split 2
    • Atlanta Major - July
    • Salt Lake City Major - September
  • Halo World Championship - October

Each tournament has a combination of familiar tournament formats namely the following:

  • Open Bracket: C- to B-tier qualifiers begin with this format. Participating teams can sign up to become one of 50 to 64 teams competing in a double-elimination tournament. The top 2 teams from each upper and lower bracket qualify for Pool Play. The rest are eliminated but they win points based on their placement.
  • Pool Play: Teams qualify for this format for being among the top of the HCS circuit point leaderboard except for the last 4 spots. Those are reserved for participants from the same tournament’s Open Bracket. All teams are divided into pools (groups) with 4 teams each and play against each other in a round-robin format.
The top 1 and 2 from Pool Play advance to the Championship Upper Bracket and the 3rd placers are seeded into Championship Lower Bracket. The bottom placers of each group are eliminated from the tournament.
  • Playoffs: This is the main event of the tournament. All teams are seeded based on their Pool Play placements. Upper Bracket teams relegate to the Lower Bracket upon losing and losers from the Lower Bracket are eliminated.

All matches in the Halo gaming leagues are played in a best of 5 (Bo5) format, except for the grand finals which is a best of 7 (Bo7). Every round in a match is called a ‘map’. This is not exclusive to Halo but a general term used in all esports fixtures at Gamdom. Knowing this term clarifies one of the most popular betting markets when you bet on Halo esports.

Halo esports betting markets

Betting markets refer to the types of bets you can make in a game. The most common one is about betting on the eventual winner of a game but many sports and esports include more kinds of prediction to make betting more exciting. Halo esports betting doesn't have a wide variety in this regard but it at least covers the basics like the following:

  • Match winner: Place a bet on which team you think will win the match. A winner is only declared when one side wins the majority of the available maps. That means winning 3 times in Bo5 or 4 times in Bo7.
  • Map winner: The map winner is whoever completes the objective of the game first. Place a bet on which team will accomplish that in the currently ongoing round.
  • Total maps over/under: You have to guess how many maps will be played in the match. Place your bet on if it is going over or under an arbitrary number. For example, the total number of rounds in a Bo5 can be between 3 to 5. Bet on under 4.5 if you think there will only be 3 or 4 maps played or over 4.5 if you think there will be 5.
  • First blood: Place a bet on the team you think will get first blood on the current map. A team gets first blood if one of its members eliminates an enemy player as the first kill of that round.

The types of bets in Halo esports are limited compared to other games like League of Legends and Dota 2. However, it’s a fair selection compared to other FPS games like VALORANT or Counter-Strike 2. To enjoy more esports betting opportunities, you should also check out other FPS esports at Gamdom.

Which are the best Halo esports teams in 2024/25?

Teams can come and go in the Halo esports open ecosystem which means you are likely to see teams participating for the first and last time without organisation backing. Some teams just don’t qualify for higher-tier tournaments while others retire. This fact made returning team names all the more impressive.

This Halo esports betting guide introduces you to the following teams:
